  1. If you could apprentice with Foundation Imaging's Ron Thornton, 
  2. what would you want to learn?

  4. Desktop Images has just produced two new instructional videos 
  5. with this Emmy Award winning visual FX director and chief model 
  6. designer for PTN's Babylon 5.  We'll soon be going back to 
  7. shoot several more and I thought I'd find out what secrets and 
  8. techniques would most interest professional LightWave 3D 
  9. artists.

  11. In the two current tapes, he walks you through the complete 
  12. process of modeling and surfacing a fully polished, network 
  13. quality spacecraft.

  15. In the first tape, Thornton starts at the very beginning, 
  16. sharing his approach to the creative process of "mech," or 
  17. high-tech mechanical, modelmaking.  He shows you how to move 
  18. from initial concept to generating thumbnail sketches on to how 
  19. he chooses the best approach to begin modeling.  Then he builds 
  20. the pieces.  Starting with a simple cylinder, he shows you his 
  21. shortcuts and guides you all the way through the process, 
  22. showing you how to finesse the design and add the detail that 
  23. sells the finished model.

  25. In the second tape, Thornton shows how to do the magic that 
  26. makes a model look absolutely real.  He shows you how to 
  27. integrate LightWave 3D with Adobe Photoshop to quickly and 
  28. easily make stunning textures and add mechanical details to the 
  29. high-tech craft he created in the first tape.  He covers the 
  30. intricacies of diffusion and specularity mapping to make the 
  31. ship look weathered.  And he demonstrates his most valuable 
  32. secrets like how to paint directly on an objects surface by 
  33. rendering then mapping the painted image back on as a surface.

  37. next?  On the slate currently:  tapes on compositing animation 
  38. with live actiion and some the advanced animation techniques 
  39. they use to create relaistic motion in robots and other 
  40. mechanical creatures.
